Lovely to see Kathy in the paper today. The Sunday Express article was fair and allowed Kathy the space to put her side of the story across. The photo was lovely and it was a pleasure to see Kathy looking so relaxed and happy.
Thankyou Ms Kirby for all the happiness you have given over the years.A true Star!!!

The first half decent photograph of you seen in years Kathy and what do we make of it? Take away the tinted glasses and the turban and we have revealed the stunning image of a gorgeously beautiful woman, on the face of it if you'll forgive the pun, in her 30s, and who is exuding enormous charm and great presence.

You are amazing Kathy!

With looks like that and your voice to match you could step straight back into a career - if you broke out in song in your natural environment on stage, you would not seem out of place at all!

Your lips, the lip-gloss, the hair your bright eyes....they are all there, they all identify without any doubt KATHY KIRBY!

Can't wait for the DVD.

With great love and affection. Tony XXX

Really enjoyed the tantalising glimpse into Kathy's world in the Sunday Express. And, how wonderful she looks!! She has the complexion of a 20 year old and with that very familiar smile she lit up the page!! I am now waiting with bated breath for the impending DVD-can't wait.
Love and best wishes, Linda.

Kathy, I rang James to thank the two of you for the signed photograph that was sent to me, and he mentioned the forthcoming Sunday Express interview and that it would carry a recent photograph.
I got the newspaper this morning and was actually nervous about opening the pages - wondering how the years had treated you. What a lovely surprise I had. Still the one and only Kathy Kirby, instantly recognizable after all these years.

Anonymous said...

It has been a remarkable day today. I have been totally surprised by ALL the telephone calls and emails regarding the interview in the Sunday Express. Kathy was rather nervous about having a professional photographer in her appartment taking shots, after over 25 years away from the spotlight. Without exception though, everyone has mentioned how delighted they were with how well she still looks, and how pleased they were to see her happy today. Thanks to everyone. James.

Again thanks for all the calls and emails today, and the blogs on here regarding the Sunday Express interview. Thought KK fans would like to know the celebrated singer Marc Almond filmed his thoughts and admiration for Kathy last week for the forthcoming DVD. Check Marc's website out on www.marcalmond.co.uk James ps I know there has been a delay with the release date but life with Kathy has never been easy!!!! Once a Diva always a Diva.............

Thought all Kathy fans would like to know Kathy filmed an on screen conversation with her famed BBC television director Ernest Maxin for the forthcoming DVD yesterday. It was a very emotional reunion for the two of them as they hadn't seen each other since the sixties. Kathy looked lovely, and Ernest as always was the perfect gentleman. He was really pleased to see how well she was looking.

Thanks James for the fabulous news.
Kathy is going to reach a whole new audience when the DVD comes out. We hear Kathy was resplendent in silver sequins and broke into song whilst being interviewed for part 2 of DVD interview.Yay!!!
We spoke to Kathy on Sunday on the phone and she was just lovely as always. What an amazing Lady!
Wishing all involved in the Odeon DVD great success and to Dear Kathy..."Our Thanks To You!"
Michael and Les.

James, just wondered does Kathy realise just HOW many fans are waiting so, so much for the release of the DVD? The love for her on these blogs just prove it. Thank you for a wonderful site to my favourite singer and STAR

This site is so very special. I asked James for a signed photograph from Kathy and it arrived within two weeks. In my covering letter to him, I mentioned where I could obtain several Kathy tracks that I was still missing. In with the signed photograph was a CD with the tracks I was looking for. No fuss, no charge, just a thank you for supporting Kathy. How wonderful.

Dear Miss kirby,

You were the first girl I ever fancied as a kid.
Now older and listening to your records, your voice is on par with the like of Shirley Bassey and even Mario Lanza for purity of sound.

May you live a long and happy life, you take care now.
Stephen.

What a simply wonderful site! Kathy just wanted to say that your two albums "Make Someone Happy" and "My Thanks to You" where you sing the great numbers from the great American songbook, rank alongside anything that the legendary US artistes ever recorded. Maybe I am biased but I think they are superior. But then I have always loved your work. Thank you for the music.

Anonymous said...

Kathy, I have searched for years for your EMI track "Do You Really Have a Heart?" - asking James he sent me a tape of the song the same week. Much prefered the "B" side "Dream on Dreamer" - what a great song. But will treasure both. Thanks James, and love to you Kathy. Leslie xxx

I had a long chat with Ernest Maxin today, he was over the moon with seeing Kathy last Monday, and still maintains the BBC shows he directed her in, were the highlight of his career. What a compliment when you consider the stars he has worked with. Go to the Internet Movie Data Base to see the volume of work he has done. It is amazing - just type in IMDB in your search engine James

Kathy,

Your live two number perfomance in the NME show on You Tube (64 I think).. is a classic showing the world what a real class act you are.The power and pitch perfect delivery is astonishing and should be seen by any artist who wants to see a true great at work.Take very good care of yourself, for to me you are a truly stunning and beautiful singer.

Anonymous said...

Stuart, thank you for the lovely message. Regarding the NME poll winners concert where Kathy sang "You're the One" - does any KK fans have details of any other artistes who recorded this number? From memory I seem to remember that Caterina Velente did - any other artistes? Such a different number to do. Note Bassey never attempted it! James

James said...

I was delighted to receive an email today from Charles Blackwell. As Kathy fans will know, Charles was Kathy's musical director on most of her recordings; particularly the massive hits and most of the tracks on the albums she recorded. His contribution to these tracks was enormous. Kathy thought the world of his work and what he did for her. He sent his love and thought the website was "excellent"
Thank you Charles for your kind words James

James said...

A message for John Derek:
John, thank you for your kind email. I have tried responding on several occasions but each time the email failed. I thought Kathy fans would appreciate reading what you kindly sent to me:
"Hi James, I have visited a few websites, but this one is just wonderful. As a young boy growing up in England in the sixties, I just loved Kathy Kirby.
This website is so entertaining with so much to see.
If you or Kathy are ever in British Columbia (I WISH - JAMES!) we would love to give you a tour and dinner. Thanks so much John".

Thank you John for getting in touch. Am sorry I was not able to respond. Warm wishes James

Although I have emailed James directly, I just want to place on record the kindness he has shown my Father. Dad recently celebrated his 60th birthday and has been rather ill these past few months. A life long Kathy fan, James acted upon on my initial request, and made sure a signed photograph and birthday card from Kathy arrived for Dad's big day. It was such a tonic for him - worth more than all the medicine in the world. Thank you James so much. With love Irene xxx

Just found your site and very pleased I am to hear one of the best British singers ever. I can say that because I am a big fan of female singers from USA and Britain, and usually Brits don't come off too well in comparison, but Kathy Kirby does, she really knows how to deliver. What's that about a DVD?

Peter

James said...

Hi Peter, thanks for your kind comments. The DVD will be coming out during the summer. It features a host of tributes from Kathy's contemporaries in show business, lots of archive material and rare interviews with Kathy's television director Ernest Maxin, and Charles Blackwell, the gentleman responsible for the arrangements of the majority of Kathy's catalogue of recordings. James ps just added two song requests on the jukebox from two fans in Australia: 'I'll Catch The Sun' and 'You Have to Want to Touch Him'

John said...

Kathy, you left the stage far too soon, but only you can know the reasons why? Am so looking forward to the DVD - can't wait! Guess what all my friends will be having as Christmas presents?!
Thank you for your music and artistry. There is no one that can interpret a lyric like you. With love John in Basingstoke xxxx ps good to see from all the blogs so many other fans feel the same as I do xxx

Sandra said...

I would just like to say a few words to all the Kathy fans out there, I had the very good fortune to spend the afternoon with Kathy last saturday, and yes the recent photo's are very good, but in all honesty they by no means do the lady justice. When she opened the door to greet us, I immediately saw Kathy as I had last seen her over 30 years ago. It was totally mind blowing. Her complection is flawless just looked like porcelain, and if that wasn't enough to take in, during the course of the afternoon she sang for us. The voice is as strong and clear as it ever was,she can still break glasses in close proximity. This lady is incredible and she still has a very warm and fun loving personality. We had a wonderfull day and if Kathy so wished, she would be more than capable of having the ability to make a single to match dame shirley,s. Thanks to james for his trust. Sandra and Cherrille.

Gavin said...

Wow Kathy what a wonderful site! Was listening to Paul O'Grady last Sunday on his weekly radio programme on Radio Two. He played Secret Love and said what a wonderful voice you have. He promised to play more tracks in the future too. I have send him a list of songs I would like him to play!
You left us all too soon, but the legacy of wonderful recordings will last forever. With love Gavin

Brian said...

Gavin, I too heard Paul O'Grady play Kathy last Sunday. I have sent him an email with a list of my favourite KK recordings. Be good if lots of Kathy fans emailed or wrote to him care of Radio 2 as well. Hope you are well Kathy. Love Brian

James said...

Thought Kathy fans would appreciate the following story:
Had a telephone call tonight from Kathy's close friend John on his way home from a meal with friends at a theatre restaurant in London's Soho. A pianist was playing in the establishment and requests were played. A diner shouted out "play some Kylie" so John shouted out "play some Kathy Kirby!" The pianist was stunned and asked "What did you say?" over his microphone. When John repeated himself the guy who looked as if he was going to faint in shock said "I adore that woman - there is no other singer like her - I love her!" The musician played 'Secret Love' and John rang Kathy on his mobile so she could listen to it. John later told him he knew Kathy well. He is going to get him a signed photograph from Kathy, and left the guy in total disbelief!

Anonymous said...

I am surprised to see that one of the greatest ever Kathy Kirby songs is not included in her list of top songs ie "My thanks to you" her version of this classic has to be recognised, also "If I loved you" and "More than you know" could you please add them to the list. Kathy's album My thanks to you should be re released as it has to rank as an all time classic album which was possibly released at a time when this kind of music was not fully appreciated. Nowadays Kathy would knock spots off of some of the so called singers of today who try to sing these songs.

Anonymous said...

Just to let you know I heard the Cilla Black attempt at singing Kathy's song Time on the Brian Matthews Souns od the sixties show, enough said.
Any chance of adding Nobody loves you like I do to the list of fav songs, I have never heard her sing this song.
Almost forgot Kathy featured on Michael Ball's Sunday morning show singing Secret Love.

James said...

Will ask Murph to add 'My Thanks to You', 'More Than You Know' and 'If I Loved You' to the jukebox this week. You might be interested to know that the album 'My Thanks to You' was released on CD on the Vocalion label in 2005. The catalogue number is CDLK 4239. It consists of 28 tracks, the album and highlights from Kathy's years with EMI.
Personally I think 'Nobody Loves You Like I Do' is the worst song Kathy ever recorded. However if you want to contact me directly, I would be happy to do you a personal copy. James

Anonymous said...

Hi James,
Many thanks for adding "My thanks to you" to the song list, also for the info. just to let you know I bought the album when it first was released and the CD.
You are doing a fantastic job with the new site, keep up the good work.
Many thanks.

Just heard about the delay in the release of the DVD,patience is a virtue, I did not know there will be a CD.Is Decca going to release some unissued recordings by Kathy from the Decca vaults? My love to Kathy and best wishes to you James and keep up the good work.

James said...

Dave, I realise the delay is frustrating for Kathy fans, but it makes sense to have both the DVD and CD released on the same date with all the publicity that is planned. Universal (Decca) are planning to release all the previously unheard tracks that are in the vaults and around 8 tracks from the EMI archive - which they have access to as well James

Anonymous said...

dreadfully disapointed the dvd has been delayed yet again .will we ever see it i wonder.

Dave said...

James, Thank you for your answer to my query in respect of Kathy's unissued recordings from Universal(Decca)it will make the wait bareable. Kathy must be so proud with all that has been going on over the months that she is still cherished by all her longtime fans. Love to you Kathy. Keep well.

James said...

I know fans are disappointed by the delays, however I feel sure the finished product will be worth the wait. Marc Almond (of Soft Cell) has also now been interviewed on camera for the DVD. He is a great admirer of Kathy's work. Check out www.marcalmond.co.uk
Who would have thought that 2010 would open with a national marketing campaign advertising both a new CD and DVD!

Charles said...

Hi Kathy, Charles here an American guy who has been living in London for the past ten years. Just found this fabulous site - a site you truly deserve. In my opinion you alone of all the UK female singers, stand up there with the American great artistes - your timing, vocal technique, phrasing and range are remarkable.
"The Way of Love" is still played often on US radio stations - no one mentions the Cher cover version!
With all the fans you have in the USA I do hope the DVD will be available over in my Country. Have read the blogs - you are well and truly loved. Charles xxxxx

Very sorry to hear of Kathy's health problems but as you say these are personal and it should be her decision as to how much is put into the public domain.
Why can nobody stop Graham Smith from making these totally unfounded and ridiculous claims? Surely someone can stop him exploiting Kathy - attempting to make money out of her name when the lady herself has already tried to distance herself from him.
I hope Kathy feels better soon and that something can be done to silence the malevolent Smith.

Anonymous said...

Just read the front page column.
It seems typical of the nastier side of todays tabloid journalism that a cove like this Smith can make a claim to know Miss Kirby. Who does he think he is? Kathy has one biographer, James and one website, this one...Smith must be living in some kind of fantasy world and its good that people like him are exposed for being the shams they are.
Keep up the good work James and please give Kathy all best wishes,
xxx Sean S

Have been to see Miss Kirby today 08/08/09 and I am glad to report she was gracious, funny and lively as ever.Dismay abounds at the comments and actions of Mr Graham Smith. What motivates such a person?Obviously not observations of a person who is in any sort of contact with Kathy.
Both myself and Kathy had a great old gossip and she had me laughing out loud.Hardly the picture Mr Smith paints of a lady in dire health. She was fantastic as ever and we are meeting again next week.
I will not address Mr Smith directly but his current version of events are fantasy and way off the mark. Miss Kirby is doing fine actually and I am grateful and proud to call her a friend.
Myself and Les are meeting Kathy next week and we can assure anyone who really cares about her, she is doing very well indeed and can do without false fantasy reports from a man who clearly does not know her at all.
All the best to Mr Harman...Keeping the faith!

It is with regret I have had to suspend the blog page until Murph returns from holiday so I can discuss the problem with him. The reason being is that the amount of abusive blogs posted by Graham Smith has now become intolerable. Not only vilifying myself but also attacking Kathy fans who have posted on the blog page.
I am well used to the bile, lies and rantings on his own website; however he doesn't seem to be satisfied to stop there. He feels the need to blog his vindictiveness here too. This spoils visits here for everyone else.
Mr Smith is an intelligent man so I cannot comprehend how he does not understand the poisonous and nasty statements he makes on his own site only alienate most Kathy fans. I know this from the feed back I get.
It got to a point last week when messages from him to my own personal email address were so intimidating and threatening I was forced to call the police. They requested him not to contact me and advised me to delete unopened any further correspondence from him. This I now do.
This spitefullness is all one way traffic. Graham Smith does not know Kathy Kirby, has never met her and does not know what she feels and thinks; so I cannot understand his fixation with abusing those close to her. As you all know Kathy has not been well recently, and my priority (along with others she regards as friends)is her welfare, and not be distracted by actions that are uncalled for, mean and petty. James

Have been to see Kathy on a number of occasions these past couple of weeks, and I am delighted to say she had looked and sounded better each time I have visited. From feed back, I know alot of fans were upset to read unfounded reports of Kathy's illness. It was exaggerated out of all proportion. Had Kathy not been taken ill around five weeks ago, she was due to move into a hotel while extensive refurbishing of her apartment took place. It just seems a sensible idea for her to remain where she is now until the work is completed. I called in yesterday to collect the post and there are no floor boards down in the hallway at the moment due to rewiring taking place! Kathy will however be home long before her October birthday. James

The blog page is now working - thanks to Murph. Anyone can view the pages but only fans via a google account can post blogs. If you haven't got a google account it is easy to sign up for one. Most important of all is that all blogs initially go to my own email in-box for me to approve or reject.
This is stop fans being subjected to the unsavoury blogs that have appeared in the past. James

We also talked of fashion, friends old and new and the best bit was when me and Kathy broke into a duet of "Big Man"!I told her I heard it on the radio and we were off!
Kathy gave us both a hug and walked us to the door. She is so much better and thanks everyone for the kindness she has been shown.

I made the mistake of introducing Mrs Hough to Kathy earlier this year, mistakenly thinking she was a genuine person.
On perhaps her third visit to see Kathy on the 30th July, Kathy was taken ill and an ambulance was summoned. Kathy's close friends automatically assumed that Mrs Hough had accompanied Kathy in the ambulance to the hospital. It transpired that after waving Kathy off, she proceeded to rifle through Kathy's personal belongings, and slamming the front door behind her when she left, took a number of personal effects all the way back to her home in Wigan. The items included a collection of designer stage gowns from the sixties, all of Kathy's own jewellery and other personal effects. Her explanation was that she was "keeping them for safe keeping"
Caroline - the landlord's representative - was anxious to have the items returned to go into storage with everything else John and myself had packed away, as she was now responsible for all of Kathy's personal effects. The days turned into weeks and still the effects had not been returned, so I felt I had no choice other than to report the matter to the Kensington and Chelsea police station. On two occasions Kathy told the police that Mrs Hough did not have permission to take the items and that she wanted the stuff returned. It was only after the police told Mrs Hough that she would be asked to attend a police station in Wigan to explain the events, that the items finally arrived back on the 17th September. She had hung onto the items for seven weeks. She also took photographs of the stage gowns - for reasons best known to herself - and that is why they now appear on another site.
While Kathy was in the nursing home John found a more economical provider for Kathy's telephone service. It automatically came with a new number. On Kathy's return home, Mrs Hough has obviously got annoyed that she now cannot ring Kathy. Well Kathy does not have friends with her 24 hours a day, and no one has put a gun to her head - it is totally up to the lady herself who she decides to ring. There is no point in blaming other people.
John and myself have had a series of "hate" texts from Mrs. Hough which would deeply upset Kathy if she saw them. Because of this neither of us will have anything more to do with the lady. However who Kathy decides to keep in touch with is totally down to Kathy herself. Anyone that knows her will tell you that - contrary to rubbish posted elsewhere - she is very much her own person and does exactly what she wishes to do. James Harman

Wow! How many of these people come out of the woodwork. How dare this woman abuse Kathy's trust and remove her personal items. Really good that you involved the police James, hope they arrest her for theft and that everything is returned soon. You and John do such a great job for Kathy, the sooner these unpleasant people disappear from the picture the better, and let Kathy enjoy the company of her real friends.

Why do people still want to hurt Kathy?.How can Mrs Hough say Kathy means the world to her and stand by and let Kathy go into hospital alone?,words fail me.I wonder how Mrs Hough would like someone to rifle through her personal belongs?I do feel sorry for you James, and John why should you have to put up with this, when all you are doing is looking out for Kathy.Mrs Hoguh, go away, and let Kathy,James, and John enjoy a quiet life. You had your chance and blew it,BIG TIME.

The trailer for the DVD is so exciting....What a build up...Loving Kathy's husky voice-over too....She is just marvellous!
I have posted the preview on Facebook and have had amazing responses from those who know of Kathy and those who want to!
James...you are very honourable and brave to go public about Mrs Sandra Houghton's actions. These were truly dispicable when Kathy was at a vulnerable stage in ill health and on the road to recovery.
Both myself and Les are regarded by Miss Kirby as trusted friends as you know.We have no hidden agenda. We have nothing to gain from knowing her and would never betray her confidence in us or her trust.Shame on those person's who still to this day seek to make a dirty dollar from a pure and gracious lady.James and John...We keep the faith and we look forward to the rise of Kathy's legend when the DVD and Decca CD are released.
Kathy Kirby....Our Thanks To You!!!!

I just had to say how unbelievable I find it that someone could allow someone they claim to care about to be carried of in an ambulance alone and then to rifle through their private and personal belongings. That alone would be despicable but to then take away things without permission and for no logical reason is totally unacceptable and quite goulish. I think Sandra should count herself lucky that you, James, and John, are such forgiving people - personally, I would have pushed for a prosecution.
How dare she then complain that Kathy no longer wants to remain in contact with her - the woman who's friendship and trust she betrayed!
I agree with Raymond - she had her chance and blew it big time.
All best wishes to James and John and continued good health to Kathy.
Linda.

Dear James, it is so sad that another site has taken upon itself to defame so many people who have shown loyalty to Kathy for so many years.
It hasn't been easy for you to do this for so long and has had many highs and lows.
The present 'anti task force' seems to enjoy belittling others as a means of promoting themselves as Kathy's saviors; but it won't work. They are only washing their own dirty linen in public.
Keep your chin up James and keep up the good work of keeping us in touch with Kathy. Forget the rest.
Best wishes, Trevor.

Hi James. I have just found this wonderful site! I was so pleased to see Kathy has a DVD due out, it will prove to be a wonderful addition to the collections of her many fans (including me!) I was astounded at how good Kathy looks, you read all sorts of things in the press etc, but I see they parent true. I just wanted to congratulate you all on a super site and would like to wish Kathy a wonderful birthday and good health (I have never forgotten her!) kind regards Mark Littlemore

I hope everyone saw the lovely article on Kathy by Jim Murray in today's Sunday Express - 18th October. If not it is available on line at their website. James

Great feature on Kathy today, James, with a lovely recent photo. My only worry was it said only some of the discovered songs would be on the forthcoming cd. For heavens sake, please include them all, especially If He Walked Into My Life, which I love Dot Squires singing. Bet Kathys version is stupendous, so please Universal, make Kathys fans happy and include all unreleased songs.

James said...

I have had an awful lot of telephone calls and emails this weekend regarding the rubbish still being told on another website about Kathy's close circle of friends. Like John, I reply that we don't look at the website, and really don't wish to know the vile rubbish that is being stated.
I had the opportunitey to play the DVD Odeon asked me to give Jim Murray for his Sunday Express article. I was staggered when at the very end it said "Kathy Kirby wishes to thank James Harman and John Pugh for all their love and support throughout the years" I rang Odeon and was told that Kathy specifically asked for the words to be added.
I only see John a handful of times each year - me being in Birmingham and him in Kent. He deserves that accolade much more than I do. Neither of us deserve the crap from one individual who has never met Kathy and knows nothing about her life today. However we take heart that it appears most fans can see beyond the bile. James

Sorry James but I have just visited that other site just to see what was going on. It is about 18 months since I visited that site and all I can say that it has not changed at all. I think this is all very sad, the most important person is Miss Kathy Kirby. I know Kathy has had some bad times but Kathy has come through with great dignity,no doubt with help from some people.
Let us remember, that is it the fans, of whoever the artist is, that make the artist successful.I have been a fan of Kathy since 1963and no matter what is written I will always be a fan for the rest of my life. This site, James, is the one and only site for me.

May I wish Kathy a very happy birthday for tomorrow, the 20th and send my love to Kathy and my best wishes to you James.

I did say Kathy looked wonderful when we saw her on the 19th October!! The birthday photos from the next day prove that!! They are 100% up to date photos, as the wall unit behind her, (with the birthday cards on) was not there before the refurbishment of her flat to my knowledge. Don't forget that Kathy was in hospital for a while, then recovering in the nursing home and she has carried on with the healthy eating etc. Good for her as her efforts have paid off and she looks years younger. I'm so pleased for her. One day when we visited her in the nursing home, her lunch was brought in and she was so worried about us not having anything to eat, that she insisted on craftily feeding me a little tiny taster of all three courses!!!!

Informative interview last night, James. Lets hope this will really help sales for the dvd. The wait for mine is now getting agonising. Nice to hear Kathy singing something other than the well known hits. Ill Get By has always been one of my faves.

I watched the Odeon DVD again tonight, having left it for a few days after my initial viewing, and I think (and hope) fans will enjoy it. Odeon have done a special job, and have handled it's subject matter with sensitively and care. It is done with affection. Don't forget it is their first profile on a singing star who is still very much with us.
Kathy has lost SO much weight since her on screen interview was recorded, however she still comes across as very vunerable, articulate and someone you just want to protect.
The clips and the tributes from her fellow stars - particularly Sandie Shaw - are really moving. I hope you all buy it. Obviously Kathy - like her record sales - is on a percentage of all copies sold. James ps At the end of the programme, she makes a point of thanking all her fans for all the presents and letters she still receives.

Hope Kathy singing My Way will be on the dvd, James. I think she sung it on Mike and Bernie Winters show and Ive lost my tape of it.
Her version is simply the best, as Tina Turner would say.

Richard, Kathy sang "My Way" on (Leslie) "Crowther's Back In Town" towards the end of 1970. Earlier in the year, she sang her then current single "Wheel of Fortune" on the Mike and Bernie Winter's Show

Lovely to see Kathy getting all the acclaim she deserves for being such a great song stylist. I was glad it didnt dwell too much on the sad times. It was so well balanced and well researched. Well done to James and Odeon. I would recommend this to every Kathy fan.

Hello James
I wanted to add my thanks to Kathy, as many others have, for all the joy she has given through her music over the years. I was a big big fan when I was a youngster and feel that we have all been deprived of a lot more that could have been produced. I have the DVD and have watched it three times so far. The DVD communicates Kathy's personality in a way I have not seen before- what a gracious and thoroughly genuine human being she is!.

What I would be interested to know from Kathy is- has she got an opinion on Susan Boyle? does she like her voice? her music?

I used to live in Kent and work in London but four years ago I purchased (with partners) a guest house in Durness- which is in the far north west of scotland, a very beautiful and remote and unspoilt area. If Kathy would like a holiday where she can completely chill out this is the ultimate destination, I would love her to come and stay.

Take a look at our website-www.wildorchidguesthouse.co.uk

I would love to hear her response.
My love and thanks to you Kathy.

Well done Kathy and thanks to James for organising it.

I have watched the dvd several times now and I am so impressed with Kathy's dignity and lack of recrimination. Mr.Conrad's comments we could well have done without, especially the cut ones-my opinion of him is on a par with our present government. The dvd led me to contact James, his response was immediate-Kathy with friends like him you will always be safe. Thank you for restoring my memories of forty years ago. Let's see that smile of yours more often. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, you are still wonderfull! Thankyou xx

James said...

The response from fans regarding the DVD has been without exception, totally favourable. The emails and telephones calls have been virtually non stop. Thank you!
Roland, I have to agree with you regarding Jess Conrad's remarks on the programme. I think his memory is being rather selective:
1: his opinion that Kathy did not look her best in the '80's is patently untrue - a number of telelvision appearances she made in this decade will support this fact. She looked as wonderful as ever.
2. His "out-take" comments are outrageous and totally without any truth whatsoever. Kathy was outraged and simply said "He should have been so lucky" As for his statement that he spiked one of Ambrose's drinks - well that would have been difficult as Bert did not touch alcohol. Just a stab at cheap publicity me thinks.
I did contact Odeon about the out take and they did agree with hindsight it should have not been included.
Will leave the last word with Kathy: "I never went with "has beens" or "never would be". Love James

Just wondering, James, if the fab dvd will be advertised in Record Collector. Be great if Kathy would grant this publication another interview.

James said...

Richard, just spoken to Odeon and a review of the DVD should appear in Record Collector at some point. A big piece on Kathy and the DVD is due in the weekly Ilford Recorder. It comes out each Thursday and the article could make this forthcoming edition on Thursday 26th November.

Today -Sunday 22nd November was a fab day for Kathy fans listening to BBC Radio Nottingham. Andy Marriot presents a show from 1pm till 4pm, and highlights a famous singer each week. This week it was Kathy, and SIX recordings were played - two per hour during the show. The programme is on line just go to their website and click the link "play again".
Thanks Andy.
Spoke to Kathy tonight and she tuned into "Strictly Come Dancing" last night as she is an admirer of Dame Shirley Bassey. Kathy was DISGUSTED that two dancers floated on half way through Dame Shirley's number. I told her it happened week after week: Everyone from Tom Jones to Cliff Richard; Bette Midler to anyone else you want to name.
Kathy was quite adamant - "me or the dancers - I would NOT have appeared. I would not want either me being distracted, or my audience!" Good for you lady, once a diva...........

James said...

Have listened to Andy Marriott's "Pure Nostalgia" show from BBC Radio Nottingham on line, and it was great to hear Andy say such nice things about Kathy.
There is a slide bar on the site to find a certain section of the show, and these are the approximate minutes in from the begining of the programme when Kathy's recordings were played:
15.30 "Bigman"
36.50 "Dance On"
1.09.50 "When I Go To Sleep At Night"
1.31.06 "Secret Love"
2.10 "Let Me Go Lover"
2.48 "I'll Get By"
Hope this is of help.

ray said...

This is a great help, James, but such a shame that the EMI recordings are hardly ever played. I also love Singer With the Band and this is never played on radio. Kathy seemed to be changing her musical direction with this and its a pity it isnt heard more often.

Tony said...

To see Kathy so lovely and relaxed in her DVD interview is a delight and perhaps a surprise too, given the 'punch-bag' of a life she endured after the heady heights she achieved in the 60s. Remarkably there is no apparent bitterness or even regret, just contentment with her life but justifiably aware of the significant contribution she has made to high quality popular singing.

Few people who achiveve major success at some time in their lives manage to maintain or even repeat the high peak. So Kathy is not unusual in that she had her 'explosive burst,' the effect from which we gratefully still witness today.

The DVD production by 'Odeon' is excellent and the scarcity of material is not overtly obvious. The clips that are featured are just wonderful and don't 'arf take you back. I think the DVD will make an excellent Christmas present for anyone who has ever delighted in the pure singing talent and exquisite charm that was Kathy in the 60s and after; or for anyone who has ever asked themselves the question: 'Whatever happened to Kathy Kirby?'

So it all turned out all right in the end Kathy.

With lots of love, Tony Carter XXX

I picked up the DVD in Edinburgh, my home city, while visiting from Seattle where I've lived for 20 years. Can only say that Ms. Kirby is more beautiful now than ever. What a lovely lady, totally free of any blame despite the hurdles she has had to face. That is her saviour, and that SMILE is unmistakable. Bought several copies of the disc for friends here who I introduced Kathy's music to, and all agree her outlook on life is as impressive as her voice is stellar. As for Jess (pfft), Liza Minnelli perhaps.

My thanks to Kathy Kirby for many happy memories, and for reintroducing herself to her legions of fans.

Hi James,

She has been through so much over the years...a lot of which i can relate to myself. Every time i read these words she wrote i am reduced to tears...not many people can do that to me.

“I am at peace with myself and that in itself is a blessing from God,” she says in a slightly husky voice. “I feel people within me, so I am not alone. I started to realise how wonderful life can be when you are all alone. All the talking in the world can’t make up for thinking.”

Hello Miss Kirby,

I was surprised to find some songs last year - I did not know.
You are the gently singer of romantic songs.
My thoughts will always be with you - by all the artists that I like so much, you are still in first place!
In accordance to the previous comment wish you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

A friend's son (he's24) got "Dreamboats" CD for Christmas. He raved about this "Kathy Kirby" so I played some tracks from your CDs. Now he's borrowed them - he has become a real Fan of yours (so has his mother .. ) You're still wowing them, kid!

Hi,
When I was 14 My Dad and I passed you Kathy, in Thorold Road, Ilford.
(Did you live in the area?)
He commented "That girl is going to be a big star"
How right he was!
We moved soon after, so I never got to see her again.
I think you should do a TV bio of your career Kathy!
Love you,
Mike.

Sad news today that Kathy has died after a short illness. I didn't know a lot about her until in the 90s I discovered I lived two doors away from her on Emperor's Gate in South Kensington. Since then I have always been intrigued by her, and it is sad to see that she is now gone.

Sorry to hear the news about Kathy. She had an outstanding voice along with equally stunning good looks.
I still play Secret Love on my MP3, it takes me back to those great days.
Saw an interview a while back where she said that she was reconciled and contented; I hope she was.
She deserved better in her career and deserved better in her private life.
Thank you James for being close to her and keeping an eye on her.

Such sad news today.
I have been a fan since the early years/ Stars and Garters etc,,and helped David Innes promote his brilliant cd 'The Long Lost Shows-live'. It is a real loss that the original TV shows were not kept by the companies involved.
We have lost one of the very few 'GREATS'
